Why didnt Green Mile get oscars over American Beauty?

November 23rd, 2009 | by admin |

If you want to see my oppinion of American Beauty read my last question.

But the same year, Green mile, a movie that was a work of art, one of the best (if not the best) book adaptations ever made.

It had a great cast, great acting, great plot, great everything. there was nothing that wasnt great about it.

How and why did it get robbed of its glory by junk?

2000 was the last time i ever watched the Oscars. I decided after that disaster that monkeys must be in charge of voting.

And i was right not to watch them since. All the great movies never get oscars. they get robbed by BS

I completely agree

You’re not alone in wondering why. Many people were shocked that "American Beauty" made it to the Oscars. Honestly, there was quite a bit of commotion about it. Maybe that worked the opposite way; maybe they voted because people were attacking it.

We’ve seen many crazy decisions throughout the years, and I’m sure that we’ll see many more. Some decisions remain a topic of debate: "Chariots of Fire" over "Raiders of the Lost Ark" or even "On Golden Pond"; "Gandhi" over "E.T." or "Tootsie"; and so on.

So often, the films and the actors people loved get overlooked if they are more-mainstream. The Academy doesn’t tend to like extremely successful films. It seems to depend on their changeable moods. Generally, they tend to go for ultra-serious films.

Where "American Beauty" came in, I still don’t understand. As I said before: I’m with you!

There are over 5,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Each member gets a vote on films that have been brought to the public within a specified time period. The top five films, actors, actresses, directors, etc., etc., are then voted on again to determine "who", "what", "when", and "where" is the best.

There is a great deal of "lobbying" by producers, directors, actors, etc. for their "work".

I agree with you. American Beauty was a piece of "junk" compared to the Green Mile; but, then, I thought Daniel Day Lewis should have won an academy award for Best Actor for his role in Gangs of New York.

There are few undisputed Oscar winners. I think of GoodFellas losing to Dancing With Wolves. Personally, I thought American Beauty was charming and subversive and The Green Mile was ponderous and boring.

The better question is why are you so upset over a popularity contest from 7 years ago?
